The Singing Saw and the rainbow song

The rainbow spans the 401

Years ago, and I mean many years ago before either of my sisters were born…when life was ALL about me…my Dad and Mom were in charge of youth work in northern Ontario.  We would sometimes travel together – just the tree of us in a little car and we would sing – three part harmony all the way!  It was by my recollection a good time in my life!  (Did I mention this was before my two sisters came along and broke my toys, took the attention off of me and generally caused me years of therapy? – Okay I’m just kidding.)

Looking back

One of the things I enjoyed was some of the creative ways my Dad would tell a story and entertain the kids who would be listening.  There was the story of the man who built a house using two large trees, a food room and a furnace room – and there were the magic tricks (the secrets of which I wasn’t to tell anyone) – and who could forget the singing saw!  Yes the singing saw!  A violin bow and a saw – that was it.  He learned to play a few songs on it and one was what most of you would know was the theme from an old television show “The Friendly Giant”.  However my Dad had different words.

“When you see a rainbow you know that God is love,
When you see a rainbow you know that God is love,
Yes, God is love. Yes, God is love.
When you see a rainbow you know that God is love.”

That’s about 48 years ago but I can still hear my Dad singing and the saw humming!  In fact I never see a rainbow that I don’t remember that song!  Which was of course the whole point.  I hope some of those kids remember too.

Tonight as we drove back from Ottawa we drove under a rainbow.  Good timing for us as we thought about Wendy’s Mom and her health condition.  A good reminder perhaps for us all.

God promised never to flood the earth again – no matter how bad things get.  God is true to His promises!
