The population of Bermuda is just under 70,000 and there are 100 churches on the island. The Salvation Army is one of the denominations We had a good review and an opportunity to see some of our buildings. It was a great experience for the review team and for us, we enjoyed reconnecting with friends of old.
We were able to visit North Street and St. George’s corps as well as DHQ, of course, and the emergency shelter and harbour light.
Wendy had the privilege of attending the officer’s retreat for the Bermuda division. The setting, of course, is hard to beat, especially in February. The location is wonderful sitting of the beach and with Bermuda’s pink sand it makes it refreshing. Missing the two storms that rolled through Toronto while we were away didn’t hurt either!
Bermuda is a tax haven, has 900 business registered there (at least on paper) and is very expensive to live on. So you can imagine that the poor of Bermuda are very poor! And because the government has no pension provision, the workforce has many seniors in it. People can’t afford to retire so they live multi-generationally to support each other.
The next blog post will show a bit more of the island and our work there.
There are times when I am amazed at the opportunities which are ours just because we are Salvation Army officers. We’ve recently been able to be in Bermuda as part of our roles within TSA. With January in Palm Desert (on vacation) and now Bermuda in February we feel like we’ve been missing some of the worst parts of winter.
The island is beautiful and it’s turquoise waters really give it a magical appeal. The weather has been enjoyable and the company great.
Even today – our last day – we went for a walk along the beach which is right in front of our hotel room.
While the day started off rainy, the sun emerged and provided us with a nice way to end the experience here.
Sunday was terrific experience as we united in worship and the hall was filled with energy! It concluded with a wonderful victory at the Mercy Seat. I love being in a room where the Spirit of God is transforming lives. That’s how it was.
I am including just a few photos from our time here. Enjoy and go to my You Tube channel to see some of the videos.
