This spuds for you

We’ve been in Toronto at meetings – can I say for too long – and I was really anxious to get home and dig up our potatoes. We planted these in early summer and I wondered how they would do. I think we need to add more sand to our soil, it is quite dry and hard and this part of the country gets so little rain.

The potatoes came out in a variety of sizes and even as I was digging to see if I could find them all I was surprised by their size variance. I don’t know much about potato growing and perhaps that is something to research in retirement,

There is just something about digging in the earth that is really satisfying. The joy of planting and then seeing the results – whether it is a bounty or not-so-much – is really joyful to me.

Are you a gardener? What do you grow?
