Followers are servants

on

I’ve written about all the books on leadership and the whole genre of leadership development that has arisen over the past number of years. I have many, many of the classic books on Leadership, some of the authors went on to become infamous for the contradictions that arose out of their leadership to the books they wrote. None more so than Bill Hybels. And yet his book on Courageous Leadership is still one of my favourites.

And yet leadership must be modeled on who we serve and how we serve. Without that necessary humility leadership can drift over to leadership that divides and diminishes rather than equips and promotes.

And what does service look like in Scripture. Jesus calls the disciples to feed the five thousand after the 12 ask Jesus to send them away so they can go look after themselves. No, says Jesus. “You feed them”. Seeing a need means we are obligated to respond if we are followers of Jesus.

Paul writes and encourages the Romans to use their spiritual gifts to build up The Church, and those gifts? Well, preaching comes first but then come service…sometimes called helps. Without those who serve, what would we do.

And who helped Jesus? Matthew 20 :17-28 tells about the women who gave of their means, and Acts 11:25-30 gives us the example of the apostles digging into their own means to help out the church in Antioch. We need people who will serve. It’s imperative to the health of our communities.

So how do you serve? What gift of service can you give for the uplifting of The Body of Christ – The Church?

Here’s a lovely song that let’s us hear some good questions, maybe questions from The Lord for you?

I love this verse:

Will you love the “you” you hide if I but call your name?
Will you quell that fear inside and never be the same?
Will you use the faith you’ve found
to reshape the world around
through my sight and touch and sound in you,
and you in me?

Will you use the faith you’ve found to reshape the world around? What a great question.

So will you?
