A day not forgotten

When we walked out onto the Massey Hall platform in June of 1983, I really had no idea what awaited us. Not only did we not know where we would be stationed, but I had no idea what running a corps would mean. And of course, I had not really thought about the fact that we would have a thrift store and family services. We know now we were being appointed to Listowel in the Ontario South Division, and Major Norm Coles would be our first DC. What a wonderful man to start with. He was kind, encouraging, humorous, and a really likeable man. Faith, his wife, was as charming and a good partner to him and a help to Wendy.

They left too soon. And the next couple were not so easy to deal with. Lesson one. Enjoy who you are working with at the time, it may not be so easy in the future.

But that day, commissioning day. It will be etched in my mind forever. First, we were astounded that we were being sent to LIstowel. We had heard a mature couple was going there…bahahahah….

Secondly, I remember seeing our family in the congregation. So many of our relatives came. I was floored by the support. Third, we were almost out of money, and by the time the night was over, we had about $1,000 in our hands. Lesson two, God provides.

Lastly, and most importantly, I had a deep sense that we were being obedient to God’s call on our lives. I’ve learned over the years that this Army, this organization, can be greatly disappointing. But I’ve also learned that when people are obedient to God, have humble spirits, and are willing to go where He calls, the results can be staggering. Lesson three: God does not disappoint. (People may).

It was a wonderful day. I was so glad that Wendy’s grandmother could be there. She was a strong force in her life and a great support to us in our early days. Of course, my parents were there. I think my Dad’s buttons almost popped off his tuni,c he was so proud. He told me, “This is the proudest day of my life.”

I’m sure other days matched it, I mean, we have had many great days as a family, but that day, he was pretty happy.

It’s been 42 years. In case you missed that, let me spell that our for you. FORTY TWO years.

I’ve done countless funerals, dedications, and weddings. Stood at the foot of hospital beds, journeyed with couples finding a way forward, sat with government officials, planned too many events!! And all the way I have felt that this was what God wanted of us.

Micah 6:8

Now, O people, the Lord has told you what is good,
and this is what he requires of you:
to do what is right, to love mercy,
and to walk humbly with your God.
