I have a friend. He’s a terrific leader. He thinks strategically, his teams love him, he is able to negotiate difficult matters, has broad experience and is very personable. He’s one of the best leaders I know. Yet, somehow, his leader gives him little affirmation, and little comfort that he’s leading well. I’ve worked with him a long time, so I know his strengths and I know his foibles.
I think we are all looking for affirmation.
I have had all sorts of people work for me. Professionals with designations and degrees, skilled workers with a trade or an education in a very hands on job. I’ve had part time employees from other lands and full time employees with heavy personal burdens.
Here’s the thing.
I can’t think of any of them who WANTED to do a bad job. Some of them were in the wrong spot, doing the wrong job, but all of them WANTED to do well. Even the people I have had to release from employment were doing their best to satisfy me and their duties.
Yes, we are all looking for affirmation. We could all use someone to come along and simply appreciate us and our efforts.
And here we are just days before Christmas when we will wish each other well, give gifts of love, celebrate family and friends – a great time to once again pause and hear from friends – and give to friends a few words of affirmation.
I care for you.
You matter
I love you.
You are a great person.
I think you’re doing a wonderful job.
We need you.
Thanks for all you do.
You make a difference in my life.
….you get it.
So why don’t you give some affirming phrases out today. Why not text a friend, a family member, a collegue.
You – and thanks for reading this. I appreciate you.
