Books, books, books

on

I like to read books. I like biographies, mysteries, fiction and non-fiction. I really like fiction books based on a real scenario. I have enjoyed leadership or management books for a long time. I am enjoying more theology books these days and books that challenge my thinking.

I currently am listening to an audio book by John Grisham, The Whistler, and reading Mark Buchanan’s book The Four Best Places to Live. Amanda loaned my a copy of The Seven Sisters by Lucinda Riley which is next. I’m finishing up Caught in the Current by Sam Reimer. The latter is a look at British and Canadian Evangelicals, with many a reference to the USA and the differences or similarities. It’s a tough read!

Mark Buchanan’s writings I always enjoy. He’s got great insight and I always learn something new from him. He sticks to Biblical stories but seems to come at them with a high degree of context and application. He’s a great writer and a friend whom I have gotten to know through our Barnabas annual gatherings.

I use Kindle to read many – I seem to find great book prices there and often have downloaded a book for free. I use the app Libby to download and read or listen to library books and of course there are those good books with ink on paper where I can mark a point or underline a well written sentence.

That book for me at the moment is Major Ray Harris’ Convictions Matter. I have been saying out loud lately that Ray is TSA’s Eugene Peterson, our version of Tim Keller, our insightful theologian. TSA has so much practical work attached to it, but I am more and more convinced that we would be well served by having an inhouse theologian who might be a member of the Governing Council or sit in with the Cabinet to discuss the impact of operational decisions. At the very least he/she should have a deep influence on our College for Officer Training.

I’m using Ray’s book to lead a Bible Study at the church for the next six weeks – a bit of a disservice to the great work of this book, but we should be able to get a glimpse into the deep subject of theology, conviction and what we believe. Week one is tonight and we begin with The Bible.
