Having just finished the book 12 Years A Slave I have to make comment on it and the subject matter. I continue to read about the lives of slaves and the slave industry with utter amazement, not amazement such as in being taken a back by the wonder or beauty of something, but amazement at the unbelievable horror and detestable mistreatment of people – men, women and children! It seems beyond comprehension that one race could so subject another to this kind of treatment, day upon day, month upon month, year upon year, generation after generation so that death seems a welcome relief to ongoing mistreatment.
Northrup who wrote this book gives detail, sometimes not enough, sometimes a bit too much, to illustrate this story and shed light upon slavery.
I ended up reading the book because I had seen the movie. I will tell you if you’re thinking of watching the movie and who have not be prepared for some rough scenes – not that there is a lot of gore or blood but watching men and women being treated in such a way grated upon my soul.
Perhaps you’ve seen The Butler and the opening sequences where the slaves are so mistreated will give you a window into what goes on for the best part of 90 minutes in 12 Years A Slave.
Don’t hide your eyes but this is no Disney movie with bubbly songs and dainty heroines.
I recommend both the book and the movie.
