Doug’s church

I had breakfast this past weekend with my friend Doug.  He’s a wonderful man and while he’s had his own personal crisis this past year that has shaken his world, he continues to pursue his faith and his relationship with God.  I thought he might leave the church behind as he attempted to put the pieces of his life back together and deal with the deep personal hurt that he suffered.  But he hasn’t left – in fact he is leaning in – maybe even more so than before.

He’s found a small church near where he lives to attend.  I asked him what attracted him to it and his response was interesting.

He describes it as small.  He uses words like “connected to community” and “caring”.  The minister preaches well (though Doug thought he could be shorter).  He described the deacons as intentional in the direction of the church and focused on the community.

He described it as “like the Salvation Army”.

By the way if you know Doug – he’s doing well.
