Jesus and hippies

I’ve seen the many reviews on this film but hadn’t watched the movie. Of course, Kelsey Grammer is well known to many as the character Fraiser Krane on Cheers and then Fraiser! I have not viewed him, knowing something of his life story as a religious man but watching him respond to this movie and his character in interviews tells me that he found this to be a very impactful moment of personal reflection.

The movie is well done and tells the story, set in the late 1960’s (see the moon landing) and projects in to the 1970’s. It has a refreshing feel to it as it explores the drug culture and “hippies” as they morph into the Jesus people. I remember clearly references to that. And more personally it reminded me of the revival that broke out at Asbury which found it’s way to Scarborough Citadel, the youth of our corps and to myself.

So watching this was a deep reminder of my own personal faith journey, of weeping for my own sins and the joy of my own salvation. I found it to be a moving portrayal, but also a personal reminder.

The portrayal of personal power, of ego in the church and the lostness that any of us can find ourselves when we view our ability to gain ground in our own strength was clearly acted out and a reminder of how good faith movements can become lost in personal agendas.

I recommend this movie which is currently streaming on Netflix.
