To dog or not to dog

We have friends, two couples, with Daschunds. In both cases, we love their dogs! They are cute, funny, and small—well, sort of small. They aren’t Saint Bernards! Did you know that Daschunds are hounds? They were bred to chase down burrowing animals, and so their short legs and strong jaws serve that purpose.

They are really wonderful dogs, though they are described as “vocal.” And vocal they are—not just barking but all sorts of other sounds.

At any rate, we decided to explore getting a miniature Daschund. I found a breeder about an hour from Edmonton, and this week, we went for a drive. So here’s the father – a red, the mom – a blonde and the pup who has just opened her eyes. She was soft, warm and purred.

Of course she’s too young to leave her mother, and the mother was keeping a close eye on us. We each held her, and it was a thrill to do so.

So will we proceed? I think we’ve decided not to proceed – yes I know – a bit disappointed I am I confess, but I think we have a couple of good reasons. But we’re still looking and who knows, a puppy may yet be in our future.
