What does it mean to be a kid at heart?

I have a memory – a strong one. I am at the cottage – Jim and I with our almost white blonde hair grabbing our “water shoes”… old running shoes to wear in the water so we don’t get “blood suckers” between our toes.

We jump in the water and walk along the shore of the cottage – heading along the shore we are stepping over logs, trees that have fallen and sunken – this is where the leaches live -and we are hunting for pollywogs. That is tadpoles, baby frogs. In the nearby marsh the frogs have laid their eggs and how those eggs are little tadpoles swimming along the shore line.

We scoop up these small silky creatures and drop them into our pail. We will watch them swim and bump into each other for a while before Nanny comes along and instructs us to let the “poor creatures go” so they can grow into frogs.

The sun is warm, and as it reflects on the water there are places where it blinds us and we turn to change the reflection. Jim and I are chatting away, talking about all sorts of things. Jim is 18 months older than I so he is the authority on all things.

And that one picture helps sum up my answer – what does it mean to be a kid at heart. Life is simple, it is good to be with family, to be doing something fun and simple but something that you learn from. And having no concerns about what will be eaten for supper, or how rent or mortgage will be paid, or what growing old will mean.

The worries of youth are very different.
