There’s a magazine holder in our house. It does not hold magazines but rather comic books – lots of them! Whenever Carlyle comes over she almost always goes to get them. She brings them to the living room, gets a drink, throws the blanket over herself and gets comfy on the couch. With legs outstretched the length of the couch (they are reaching further down the couch all the time) she takes 3 or 4 comics and begins to read one after the other.
I’m sure she’s read them all, more than once or twice. And yet you’ll hear her laughter as she flips the pages and goes from one comic book to the next. It’s quite delightful and I confess to laughing along with her in the pure delight of listening to her giggles! I do not want this stage going by too quickly! It is the essence of innocent fun.
Carlyle was with us for quite a bit this weekend and at one point she brought me one of the ads that were in comics of that era.

“Were these still available?” she asked. If only they were. But that did cause me to take a look at some of them. I remember these as a kid…my favourite was the offer of SEA MONKEYS!

Just add water! Of course I know now that they were selling shrimp eggs and instantly might be a bit of an exaggeration as I’ve grown shrimp to feed fish when I was breeding fish. What else did I find… how about this from 10 year old Catherine Waters of London Ontario who wanted to join the Archie Club. I mean who wouldn’t want to join the club?

Do you remember these ads? They were so funny – and frankly it wasn’t to see through skin, but clothes that I and my friends thought we should buy the x-ray glasses.
