Reflections on Ottawa

on

We were in Ottawa from 1995 to 2000. It was five tough but wonderful years. I won’t here go into why it was tough – maybe some day – but it was also a good time. We did two mission trips, one to Jamaica and the second to Panama. The corps grew, our finances grew and we were able to do a major renovation of the building and an addition. We started Saturday Night Live once a month and we were able to grow our local officer pool.

In the city we were blessed to have Bert and Kathy, Les and Tiffany, Marsha and Dave, and we had Floyd and Tracey with us. It was a good mix and we really got along well. I don’t think any of us really knew how fortunate we were at the time. We met monthly on a Monday morning – orange juice, muffins and the like to start. Then on to a conversation around the mission in the city. From there it was out to lunch before heading off for the rest of the day. It was encouraging and provided energy for the tasks at hand.

None of us every found another mix like that. When we went to Calgary the folks there were leary of getting together. Why? I never knew.

Of course that mix have stayed in touch. Dave and Marsha are now in Germany but good ol’ Messenger let’s us chat from time to time. Les and Tiffany joined us in Toronto for too short a time. And now we are settled well in Edmonton.

So watching yesterday’s celebration of life for Floyd was very moving and we shed more than a few tears. I’m posting the service here if you didn’t watch it – or would like to.

Chris and Kaleena both spoke of their Dad’s legacy and experiences growing up. They did so very well. Kevin was of course excellent as Floyd knew he would be. And most moving of all I think was the song – He will hold me fast. What a great anthem!
