Surprise, Surprise! The Opposition didn’t like the budget

Yesterday as I was making way home, I was watching the news in the airport.  The Budget had been presented and while not every party got what they wanted out of the plan, there were each of the oppostition leaders railing against the inadequacy of the budget.

Now maybe it isn’t a great budget – maybe it’s too conservative (pun intended) or it isn’t liberal enough…maybe it isn’t seen as been democratic for the NDP…but really – is it a surprise that not one of them was willing to support it?  I’m wondering great blogosphere readers, are you anxious to go to the polls?  Should we shell out millions of tax dollars for another election?  Do you want to endure six weeks of ads from every party telling you what is wrong with the other parties?

Will any one of the parties tell us their plan, their platform in detail and grant us some dignity in not attacking the origin, beliefs, haircut, waistline or dress size of the other leaders?  Can we count on some good debate around policy rather than horse play around every misplaced word?

Here’s my call.  If we must go to the polls, and I’m far from convinced we should or need to…then let it be for a good reason and let it be a debate on the ideals and principles of what it means to be Canadian – to live in a country where freedom is fully granted and fully appreciated.  Let the election race be done in a Canadian way – not in the nature of US politics where creating fear in the electorate in voting for the opponent is the only way to create momentum for a campaign.

I don’t think we need an election and I’m not too pleased that the opposition parties are signaling they are wanting one.  However I can’t say I’m surprised at all…it is, it would seem, the only thing that the opposition can ever do to get our attention for 5 minutes, by calling for and defeating a minority government.

And chances are…it will be another Conservative minority.  Millions wasted so that the Liberal Party can be convinced they have the wrong leader.
