Mother’s Day recap

It was an early morning – up and hit the road for St. Catharine’s but the weather was great and the sunshine blessed our journey.  We joined Mom at the Corps for the service and then went off for lunch together at Queenston – what a wonderful buffet it was and made better by being together as a family.  We are a truly blessed family and it was a good day together.

Here’s a few photos from the day.

They’ve taken God out of the schools – really?

Every once in a while I see someone post on Facebook, or see written somewhere a lament that we no longer have the Bible read or prayers said in our schools.  People lament that God has been taken out of the schools and claim the outcome is violence in our society.  While on the surface this might be an argument that Christians would agree with, I have to say I disagree with the sentiment and the assumed  consequence.

What do I think you might ask.  Well, to start with whether a Bible is in the school, or read in the classroom does not determine God’s presence.  God is present always.  It is a theology that is filled with idolatry that assumes unless man shows up with a Bible (or 4 spiritual laws) that God is not present.  God was in the schools then – He is in the schools now.

Secondly, the school still has Christians in attendance.  It is the Spirit of God at work in Christians that will make the difference.  If Christians shared their faith, if they told others about how God was at work in their lives then people would want to know more and presumably go and get a Bible to read for themselves.  In fact it Christians in all walks of life shared more freely, more openly our culture would be less secular.

I remember standing at the beginning of each day by our desks – we sang God save the Queen, untill we had a national anthem – and  yes I’m that old – then we said the Lord’s Prayer together.  And in some schools I attended (I attended 10) the teacher would also come around and exam us to see if we had clean clothes, clean hands and faces and even clean finger nails.  And once the teacher took me to the front to show the other kids what clean looked like!  (Thanks MOM!)

Yup – it was a different day and age.  But there was still violence.  There were still dishonest people.  There was still evil in the world.

If I could have my way I would ask – please don’t be posting or talking about God not being in the schools.  That’s just very bad theology!  And it’s a bad witness!

Where can I go from your Spirit?

    Where can I flee from your presence?

If I go up to the heavens,<sup class="crossreference" style="font-size: 0.65em; font-weight: bold; vertical-align: top;" value="(L)”> you are there;

    if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
