War Cry 1931

I am not really sure where we got this. It’s in great shape, though the paper is very heavy, almost glossy, so it is a more durable paper than what I think of when you say War Cry. The papers that I gave out/sold as a young officer were newsprint and easily ripped.

December 19 1931

You’ll see that this is the Canada East publication. Headquarters was at the corner of James and Albert Streets. There’s a great historical review on this site. The “old building” that we knew that replaced this building is now gone too having been sold and demolished in 1995.

In December 1931 Statute of Westminster gave complete legislative independence to Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Ireland (Free State), and Newfoundland (not then part of Canada). As well coaxial cable was patented!

The TC of the day, Commissioner Hay, was the president of the first High Council in 1929 and came to Canada as his final appointment before retiring.

OF course the War Cry was the official organ of The Salvation Army, and you know that if you played Trivial Pursuit in decades past! At 10 cents per copy that is the equivalent of $2 today – so not a bad price. Of course 1931 was well into the Great Depression and I imagine for many 10 cents was a precious amount.

The center piece by the TC

I suspect that there is not much value in this copy, but it is interesting to me and I will keep it for the time being.
