The garden has been harvested. Not that I have taken everything out of the garden – the carrots and dill remain, but the tomatoes, cherry, yellow pear, San Marzano, Big Daddy, and Big Momma are all off the vine.
I am always amazed at the size of plants and root systems but this year the roots were massive. We had early warm weather in May and June, getting up to 30 C and lots of rain through July and into August. If you decide to plant yellow pair tomatoes, that are wonderful in salads, don’t plant too many plants. We had two and we are overrun with their fruit!
The San Marzano is an Italian Roma tomato and is nice and fleshy and delicious. They grew well this year too!

I used this lid from a large storage container to put our tomatoes. I had already picked quite a few tomatoes and we’ve been eating them for about three weeks. But now the number of fruit will include the unripened ones which will go to a cool, dark place in the basement to ripen slowly. Last year we ate tomatoes from the garden into early November.
You can also see we harvested a number or jalapeno peppers – and that’s just from one plant.
Now, it’s just a while before we start planning for next summer!
