This is a good day to reflect on the women in our lives. Of course, we all have a mother and I hope your mother was also a MOM! I begin with the recognition of the wonderful Mom in my life who shaped so much of what and who I am. Countless hours of nurture and care came to me without my recognition – and when I was old enough to see and appreciate her care I wasn’t always so articulate or willing to say so – so thank you to Mom!
Wendy has been my life partner now for over 37 years. Wow – hard to imagine so many years have flowed through and around us and in doing so we’ve lived in seven different cities, raised two boys, served in a variety of appointments. We’ve shared joys and losses – we’ve traveled on holidays to many places and found in each other strength, partnership, companionship, and loyalty. Without getting mushy here, I can say that I am a better person for having journeyed with Wendy. I don’t call her my best friend – that seems too casual, too distant. We’re much closer than friends, understand and are committed to each other well beyond the image that conjures up in my mind. No, I say we are life partners – through thick and thin we are growing old together.
I think about my sisters too and their contribution to my life. Leanne who surprised me at age 10 with her big brown eyes and energetic curiousity. Then Cath who came along with blonde hair and gentle spirit. These two have quietly changed my view of life by allowing me to be a big brother. Leanne’s daughter Hannah and Cath’s daughter Laura are emerging into their own lady like personalities and will continue to extend the Waters’ family in the years to come with joy and growth.
Then there’s my mother-in-law, Ruth, who is now with Jesus but also was a wonderful presence of joy and overcoming. Her life wasn’t easy but she was easy going in the struggles.
My sister in law Adele and her lovely talented daughter Meghan enrich our experience as a family.
Then there’s the girls who married Phil and Jason – Amanda and Susan respectively have added real joy to our families as they fill their roles beside the boys and raise their children. I have prayed for them much and look forward to seeing them also grow in grace and charm.
And now there’s Rachel, Carlyle and Beth – just young girls now but one day will be young women too, who will love and care for those around them.
I hope that our influence – mine and yours will be positive in forming all the women in our lives into gracious people who add to the productivity and joy of our lives.
Thank you to the women in my life.
