Rights or responsibility

All our eyes have been upon Newtown during these past few days.  Our hearts broken – the town will never be the same.  There is talk that the school, the scene of the shootings may be torn down.  Now comes the debate, and the questions.

The guns and ammunition at question are assault weapons, not hunting weapons.  Gun laws need to be addressed and the discussion needs to not be silenced as time progresses.

Obviously mental health needs to be addressed to. This is a complex issue but is not an unclear.

Some suggest that the solution should be more guns – like one official who has suggested that the Principal should have had a gun to protect the students.  If the solution to too many guns is more guns I’m perplexed.

The proliferation of hand guns and assault weapons is spilling into Canada and that, I suspect, along with the horrific nature of this crime has our attention north of the border.

So yes I’m in favour of greater restrictions on guns.  I don’t believe this has anything to do with citizen rights and everything to do with the responsibility of protecting citizens – young and old.
