How sad, how tragic, is the news coming out of Newtown. The availability of guns of course is part of the problem – there are other issues in this. What is obvious is that a number of homes will be going through the needless pain of planning funeral rather than celebrating Christmas.
I wish we could create a different future but it seems that our fallen world continues to fall. Of course God weeps at how fallen His creation has become – how we’ve grown to love darkness rather than light, how we’ve chosen selfishness over sharing.
We need to be careful to what we attribute this hideous act – it is neither an act of God nor due to His inattention. No indeed we’ve been given free will and many chose to use that free will in ways we’ll never understand – as it has been all through history. Remember that Cain killed his brother Abel because he was jealous.
So what’s the answer to this madness?
Well that’s what Christmas is all about. The Prince of Peace came to this world – “not to condemn the world, but that through Him it might be saved.” – John 3:17.
How is the world saved? Well one heart at a time. Hard to believe but Jesus started with just twelve.
