With our move this has been a very different kind of summer. Changing cities is one thing – changing provinces is another. It seems all our down time is taken up in unpacking, getting registered for one thing or another, setting up accounts and services… so this past two weeks has been a wonderful interlude in the rest of life. I might even call it an oasis. We did promise ourselves we would do some day trips, and despite the price of gas being in the neighbourhood of $1.30 per gallon, we managed to see some sights. Among the places we wanted to visit was the small town of St. Jacobs just on the northern border of Waterloo. It was another one of those hot days, but with hats in hand we set out to visit a very familiar town. This area is noted for the work and culture of the Mennonites (Old Order) and the baking, quilts and handicratfts all share this trait. Wendy was, as you might expect quite pleased to visit the quilt shops and estimated, by the value of what was on display for sale, that her quilts would sell for in excess of $1000. She of course simply gives them away, but I was thinking – micro business!

It was a delightful day, and I was in such a good mood I even managed to take a picture of a cat…Wendy had a curious look on her face when she saw what I was doing. Summer in Ontario is certainly hot and humid, but we are enjoying it and are constantly commenting about how close everything is in relation to the long distances we have become accustomed to in the west!
