When I went to get my driver’s licence in Ontario (and handed in my Alberta Licence)…I told the clerk my old number. For whatever crazy reason I’ve always had my 16 digit Ontario Licence memorized. Maybe because it was in Ontario I learned to drive, maybe because this is where I first got my driver’s licence, or maybe because I remember numbers better than names.
Since leaving Ontario in 2000, I have been driving in a province that has less people in it than this city. So I thought you might be interested in what I’ve learned, perhaps re-learned, since returning to Toronto.
And these are in no particular order.
1. when starting up off a green light hesitate…the traffic crossing the intersection may or may not stop
2. red lights apparently are suggestions not law…if you can stop, wish to stop, you may…otherwise continue through the intersection
3. the chances of someone letting you in to line is relative to the time they’ve already been in their car…if they let you in, they just started driving
4. centre lanes are for making left turns from…apparently
5. the smaller the vehcile, the faster it goes
6. not every driver speaks…or reads…english
7. yelling ‘God bless you’…at other drivers helps relieve tension
So in week two of the resettlement of The Waters I can say we are finding our way around, discovering some very nice food establishments are enjoying getting grocery prices we can live with!
