Despicable Me = The Christmas Carol

I have a new favourite movie.  Pixar Animation Studios has secured it’s position for now as the studio to beat when it comes to intriguing, insightful and really funny animation.  The character of Gru, though based on a man who desires to be evil, it isn’t long before the audience is both familiar and fond of him.  Despite his objective (of being the greatest villain) his cold heart ends up being melted by three little girls.

This is where the parallel stands out – Dicken’s Christmas Carol tells a similar story – and the transformation of our villian over time emerges.  His heart is warmed, his priorities change, and though he still sees himself as becoming a great villain he is unable to resist the warm and caring nature of the little girls.

I have to say there are some great one liners – and the minions are charming!  I loved listening to their giperish!  Though they look the same, they have different personalities, different likes, different thoughts.  Most of all they just want to do well at what they do.  Not so different than you and I – right?  Somehow they’ve become followers of Gru… misled, misinformed?  The script never tells us.

I don’t want to over analyze – it is just a really good movie with lots of funny laughs.
